Cathedral City

Cathedral City grew from a small bedroom community to a thriving, family-oriented place to live.

Young families make up the bulk of Cathedral City’s population. The median age here is 32.8 years. The city also has a multiethnic population — 57 percent of residents are white, 37 percent are Hispanic and 2.1 percent are African-American.

Schools in Cathedral City are part of the Palm Springs Unified School District. There are four public elementary schools, two middle schools, a high school and a continuation school within city limits.

Cathedral City residents don’t travel far for health care either. The Eisenhower Medical Center in Rancho Mirage operates an Immediate Care Center on Highway 111, and Express Health Care offers outpatient and clinical services a few blocks down the road.

More than 15 churches of various Christian faiths lie within city limits. Nearby Palm Springs serves members of the Jewish faith with four synagogues.

Cathedral City has also, as a municipality, reached beyond its physical growth to provide residents with a progressive local government. Last year, it introduced a Community Police Services program, which placed three police offices in shopping centers, raising the force’s visibility and offering residents quick access to law enforcement.

In 1997, the city became the first in the valley to pass a domestic partner ordinance, recognizing its role as home to many gay residents and gay-owned businesses. Live-in partners in Cathedral City are now afforded the same rights to health care and benefits as married couples. Since its incorporation, Cathedral City has sought to bring young, middle class families into its fold. A variety of homes have been built within the past 15 years, from country club communities to mobile home parks, and the city, the valley’s third largest, maintains one of the area’s highest employment rates. It is, as local officials like to say, a city “on the move.”
