With a population of more than 52,000, Indio is the Coachella Valley’s largest city, yet it has retained much of its small-town America flavor. Indio began as a stop on the Southern Pacific Railroad, and in 1886, the railroad company president brought date shoots to the area for planting. More than 100 years later, Indio produces 95 percent of the country’s date crop.
Nicknamed the “City of Festivals,” Indio is home to the Riverside County Fair and National Date Festival. Each February, the city — and all of Riverside — celebrates its heritage with an Arabian-themed county fair featuring ostrich and camel races, a carnival, exhibits and date-based cuisine. The International Tamale Festival, held each December, draws locals and visitors alike. Indio is also home to world-class polo, with both the Empire Polo Club and El Dorado Polo Club the scene of many equestrian events. Indio has the Valley’s largest equestrian facilities and hosts the West’s largest hunter/jumper horse show annually, as well as the U.S. Open Polo Championships.
