La Quinta
La Quinta is the Coachella Valley’s youngest city, incorporated
in 1982 and growing ever since into a bedroom community and major tourist
draw.
La Quinta’s history dates to 1926, when a San Francisco hotelier
opened La Quinta Resort & Club in a once-secluded part of the Coachella
Valley. The resort now dominates the city’s landscape, employing
1,900 people and offering more than 640 guest suites and casitas, 25 swimming
pools, meeting rooms, three golf courses and a nationally acclaimed tennis
club.
The city has five parks: Fritz Burns Park, a complex with lighted tennis
courts and a water sculpture; La Quinta Sports Complex, with ball-fields,
playgrounds and basketball courts; Adams and Eisenhower parks, with a
walking trail and playgrounds; and Frances Hack Park, with a community
building and basketball courts. Lake Cahuilla County Park, a 135-acre
reservoir surrounded by grass and date palms, is nearby, offering camping,
boating, hiking and fishing in trout and bass-stocked waters.
Also available to residents are city-sponsored, family-oriented activities,
including an annual Easter Egg Hunt, a Dog Day for city pooches and their
owners, community picnics and bike rodeos. Other recreation opportunities
include golf at some of the world’s finest courses, including PGA
WEST™ and Rancho La Quinta, home of the 1997 and 1998 SKINS Games.
Arts are also emphasized here. Each year, more than 250 North American
artists exhibit their works at the La Quinta Arts Festival.
Bermuda Dunes is currently an unincorporated community of Riverside County
adjacent to La Quinta. Nearly all the homes here consider Palm Desert
and La Quinta their source for shopping and entertainment.
